We are excited to announce an exclusive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminar featuring Priit Mihkelson, a third-degree black belt from Estonia, known globally for his innovative defensive strategies and minimalist approach to the art. Priit began his martial arts journey with karate and Aikido before transitioning to Jiu-Jitsu in the early 2000s. Since earning his black belt in 2012, he has become a prominent figure in the BJJ community, celebrated for his expertise in defensive postures and movements.
In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, maintaining hygiene is more than just routine—it’s essential for the safety and well-being of everyone who steps on the mat. Cases like Gordon Ryan’s struggle with recurring staph infections serve as reminders that a strong hygiene protocol is non-negotiable in any grappling environment.
Imagine picking up a book like Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra at random, flipping through its pages, and thinking, Hey, this might actually help me understand why I keep getting smashed on the mats in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu .
Slavoj Žižek’s concept of invisible violence reveals how societal norms subtly shape behaviour and control individuals without overt force. This dynamic mirrors the principles of “invisible Jiu-Jitsu,” where subtle techniques achieve control without the opponent’s awareness. Similarly, fear-based self-defence programmes—often framed as “anti-bullying” or “women’s empowerment”—focus on personal safety, reinforcing reactive responses while neglecting systemic causes of violence.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers more than just self-defence—it is a practice of personal growth and self-discovery. Structure provides the necessary foundation, while playful exploration fosters creativity and authentic expression. However, rigid systems and grading frameworks can hinder this growth, limiting the practitioner’s potential. Mastery in BJJ lies in balancing structured learning with the freedom to engage with unpredictability, ensuring the art remains dynamic and transformative.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is gaining recognition in Australia as a powerful tool for enhancing children’s neurological development, offering benefits that extend beyond physical fitness. Experts suggest that this martial art contributes to improved motor skills, empathy, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and resilience—all while ensuring children have fun.
The popular mantra that “you learn when you lose” is often used to soften the sting of defeat, encouraging athletes to view setbacks as valuable lessons. However, this mindset remains rooted in a win-lose paradigm that shapes much of competitive sport.
At Blue Mountains Jiu Jitsu Academy, wearing a white Gi is more than just a uniform; it represents a tradition of respect, discipline, and commitment to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). However, the Gi is just one part of a larger system of values and habits that help create a strong, respectful training environment. Let’s explore why we wear white Gi’s and the key habits that reinforce the culture we uphold at the academy.
