No submissions. No competition. No cost.
The Winter Course
Foundations
Learning the BJJ basic positions and the relationship between posture, strength, and holding ground. Getting comfortable in the jiu jitsu space and with each other.
Great Escapes
Finding, making and holding space. Problem solving out of difficult situations.
Movement, Connection, and Flow
Flow and transitions. Using leverage and positional awareness to get to a better place.
Why The Wriggle Room exists
This was made for the women who don’t think BJJ is for them.
Maybe you’ve thought about trying something physical, and then quietly talked yourself out of it. Too unfit. Too anxious. Too out of practice with your body. Too much going on.
Maybe the idea of being in someone else’s personal space, learning to move differently, and problem-solving your way out when you are stuck — maybe that sounds both terrifying and even a little bit like exactly what you need.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is, at its core, a game between two people. It asks you to be present, to trust, to try, to fail, and to try again. It is a great way to improve muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness, reduce stress, improve wellbeing — and it turns out, it’s also just genuinely fun.
The Wriggle Room was created for women who want the fun, freedom, and fitness BJJ can bring, but also need it to feel safe first. Classes are small, structured, and run by someone who understands that bodies and minds have stories.
What happens in class
No submissions. No stress.
There is no pressure to “win.” Submissions are not part of this curriculum. We focus entirely on positions, movement, and escapes.
Small cohort, real community
Winter Intake is deliberately limited. You’ll train with the same people, build trust, and grow together.
Sundays, 12 midday to 1pm at The Basement
Opposite Springwood Train Station.
One session per week. Enough to build something.
Trauma-informed approach
Become who you are: Work with what you have, where you are at. Find new limits.
Years of working as a GP taught Coach Lou how much adversity impacts upon our physical health. BJJ is not simply a form of self defence, but can be a joyful form of healing: body and mind.
Working with another person in a safe environment, using your body and mind to problem-solve and grow, can quietly rewrite how you can be, and who you can become. It’s why programs for veterans to improve PTSD have taken root around the world.
Every person arrives with a different story, in a different body, on a different day. Coach Lou endeavours to meet all of that.
Real physical challenge
Get stronger. Get more flexible. Discover abilities you didn’t know you had.
Free. Fully.
No membership fees. No hidden costs. Quality instruction without financial barriers — because this should be for everyone.
Your Coach
BJJ Meets Urgent Care
Coach Lou has spent years as a GP and an Urgent Care doctor in the Blue Mountains: working with people navigating illness, injury, mental health challenges, and recovery. She understands, at a clinical and deeply human level, how hard it can be to overcome injury and illness — and how transformative it is when you do.
She brings that same precision and care to the mat. Classes incorporate an understanding of how trauma, anxiety, and chronic illness intersect with physical movement. Coach Lou will tailor class content to meet you where you are at.
Your particular needs are not too much for this class. You are exactly who it was designed for.
Who this is for
Women 16+ who are ready to try something new.
You don’t need fitness, experience, or confidence. You just need curiosity. The Wriggle Room can work with the rest.
- Managing anxiety or depression — movement is medicine, and this class is designed with that in mind
- Living with chronic illness or injury — classes adapt to you, not the other way around
- Rebuilding a different relationship with your body — this is a judgment-free space for exactly that.
- New to martial arts entirely — beginners are the whole point; there’s no catching up to do
- Healing from trauma — the trauma-informed approach means your boundaries are built into every class
- Simply curious — you’ve heard about BJJ and wondered if it might be for you. It might be. Let’s find out.
